From Frustrated Noob to Full-Time Music Producer
You’ve got ideas in your head, maybe even some finished tracks, but when it comes to actually producing music that sounds professional—it feels like you’re banging your head against the keyboard.
Yeah. I’ve been there.
When I first started, I knew nothing about music. I’m talking zero. No theory. No clue how to use a DAW. I didn’t even know what EQ or compression were—let alone how to use them. I couldn’t play an instrument, and I definitely didn’t know how to quantize.
My tracks wouldn’t even stay on the grid! Utterly unlistenable was my music.
So I did what most people do:
I dove into YouTube tutorials, thinking I’d eventually piece it all together.
Spoiler alert: I didn’t.
I got fragments of knowledge, out of order, and with no real system. It was like trying to build a spaceship with IKEA instructions—written in another language. I even spent thousands of dollars on new plugins (Waves Mercury bundle anyone?), thinking that was the missing piece.
It wasn’t, because I still didn't know how to properly use the dang plugins.
I still remember the day I swore I was going to finish my best song ever. I had a plan. I had version 15 loaded up. I spent hours mixing... re-mixing... tweaking... undoing... re-tweaking.
When I finally compared it to where I started, I realized something horrifying:
It sounded worse.
Not just not better—actually worse.
I gave up. Closed the project. Walked away from mixing for weeks.
Do a slow and melancholic interpretive dance in your chair if you can relate.
The Turning Point
Eventually, I realized the painful truth: I didn’t have a gear problem—I had a skill problem.
So I went all in.
While other people in their 20s might travel the world or buy a nice car, I invested close to $10,000 in audio engineering school, and then another $40,000+ on online courses and coaching—everything from songwriting, production, mixing, to digital marketing.
Yes... I was broke after.
But the real breakthrough came when I got mentorship. I found someone who had been producing since the 1970s, and I got to ask him anything. I soaked up his techniques, his shortcuts, his wisdom.
